Best Cultivation Donghua for Chinese Learners by Level (2026)
The best cultivation donghua for Chinese learners combine clear voice acting, on-screen Chinese subtitles and a story you can follow from the visuals. This list ranks eight xianxia and cultivation donghua from easiest to hardest, each with its studio, platform, episode count, an estimated HSK level and notes on what makes the first episode hard.
Cultivation donghua are a good bridge between textbook listening and cultivation novels. You hear the genre words (筑基, 师兄, 道友) pronounced over and over, and most Chinese releases show Chinese subtitles on screen, so you can read along. None of these overlap with our general donghua list, which covers kids' shows, films and modern stories.
Quick picks: start with The Daily Life of the Immortal King (仙王的日常生活), a modern school comedy on Bilibili. For a classic sect story, try A Will Eternal (一念永恒) on Tencent Video. Save Renegade Immortal (仙逆) and Sword of Coming (剑来) for HSK 5–6.

What makes a cultivation donghua easy or hard?
Four things: the setting, the dialogue speed, the amount of narration and the length of the series. A modern setting with jokes is easiest, because the dialogue is everyday Mandarin. Classic sect stories add genre vocabulary but repeat it constantly. Literary adaptations use voice-over narration, poetry and philosophy, which is the hardest listening on this list.
Cultivation donghua also come in two looks. Bilibili and Tencent both commission long-running 3D series (3D动画) that release weekly, sometimes for years, and slower 2D series. 3D shows tend to have more fights and narration; 2D shows tend to have more dialogue. Dialogue is easier to learn from.

Easiest: modern settings and comedy
The Daily Life of the Immortal King 仙王的日常生活
Wang Ling is a high-school student so powerful that he has to wear seals just to stay inconspicuous. All he wants is a normal school life, which the cultivation world keeps interrupting.
Why it works for learners: This is cultivation in a modern Chinese high school, so most of the dialogue is about classes, friends and teachers, with cultivation words dropped in. The comedy is visual, which helps you follow when you miss a line. What makes episode 1 hard: very little. Expect some fast comic dialogue and names to get used to. Netflix carried season 1 in some regions.
Heaven Official's Blessing 天官赐福
Xie Lian is a god who has ascended to heaven for the third time, and the whole heavenly court finds this hilarious. Sent down to investigate a bride-stealing ghost, he meets a mysterious young man in red.
Why it works for learners: The 2D animation is calm and the voice acting is clear, with plenty of quiet conversation between scenes. You learn the vocabulary of gods and ghosts (神官, 鬼王, 飞升) rather than sect ranks. Episodes are a manageable length, and the two seasons together are only 24 episodes. What makes episode 1 hard: it moves between past and present, and the heavenly officials' titles come quickly. Read the manhua (in our manhua guide) alongside it.
Soul Land 斗罗大陆
Tang San, a disciple of a sect famous for hidden weapons, is reborn in a world where everyone awakens a "martial soul" in childhood. He starts out in a village and soon heads to an academy for gifted young fighters.
Why it works for learners: Not strict xianxia but 玄幻, with its own ladder (魂士, 魂师, 大魂师 and up) that the show repeats endlessly. Much of the early series is set at a school, so the dialogue is simple and the plot is easy to follow. It is very long, so watch the first 20–30 episodes and decide. What makes episode 1 hard: a burst of world-building terms. Learn the 魂 ladder first.
Middle: classic sects and clans
A Will Eternal 一念永恒
Bai Xiaochun is a village boy terrified of dying. He joins a cultivation sect to live forever and quickly becomes its most chaotic disciple.
Why it works for learners: A comedy in a traditional sect, so you get the standard vocabulary (外门弟子, 灵石, 丹药, 筑基) with lots of shouted, repeated lines that are easy to catch. Short episodes make it easy to rewatch one twice: once for the story, once for the words. What makes episode 1 hard: fast comic dialogue and sect ranks. The novel has an official English translation on Wuxiaworld if you want to check the plot.
Mo Dao Zu Shi 魔道祖师
Wei Wuxian, the feared founder of a demonic path, is brought back to life in a stranger's body years after his death. He soon crosses paths with Lan Wangji of the strict Lan clan.
Why it works for learners: The animated version of the story behind The Untamed. It is shorter than the drama and uses the same clan vocabulary, courtesy names (字) and titles (宗主, 公子, 含光君). Watching it after the drama is excellent review. What makes episode 1 hard: the story starts in the present and jumps back later, and everyone has two or three names. See our Untamed study guide for the naming system.
A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality 凡人修仙传
Han Li is a farm boy with poor talent who gets into a martial-arts sect by chance. Without a great destiny, he survives through caution, patience and a mysterious little bottle.
Why it works for learners: The show follows the novel that popularised the standard realm ladder (炼气, 筑基, 结丹, 元婴), so it is the best way to hear those words in context. The 3D style means more narration and fight scenes, and the hero says little, so listen for the side characters. What makes episode 1 hard: the opening is set among mortals and martial artists before any cultivation, with rural and medical vocabulary. Pair it with our xianxia glossary.
Harder: dark and literary
Renegade Immortal 仙逆
Wang Lin, a quiet boy from an ordinary family, gets into a cultivation sect with little talent. The world he enters is harsher than he imagined, and he sets out on a long, lonely path.
Why it works for learners: Darker and more serious, with long fights, inner monologue and Daoist ideas about heaven and fate. The vocabulary is classic xianxia, but delivered in heavier, more formal language. What makes episode 1 hard: narration and a grim mood with little light dialogue to lean on. Watch two or three episodes of A Will Eternal first; both come from the same author.
Sword of Coming 剑来
Chen Ping'an is a poor orphan in a small, strange town that has hidden ancient powers for centuries. When outsiders start arriving, his quiet life begins to change.
Why it works for learners: Beautiful and slow, with dialogue full of Confucian and Daoist ideas, sayings and literary turns of phrase. It is the hardest listening here, but also the shortest series, so you can finish it. What makes episode 1 hard: a large cast arrives at once and characters speak in riddles. Watch with Chinese subtitles and pause often.
The best watch order for learners
- The Daily Life of the Immortal King: modern Chinese with a light layer of cultivation.
- Heaven Official's Blessing: calm 2D storytelling, gods and ghosts.
- A Will Eternal: your first sect story; comedy keeps it light.
- Mo Dao Zu Shi: clans, courtesy names and formal address.
- A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality: the classic realm ladder.
- Renegade Immortal and Sword of Coming: heavier language and themes.
Soul Land sits apart: start it any time after the first pick if you like long, school-centred fantasy.
How to watch cultivation donghua for learning
- Use the on-screen Chinese subtitles. Read along on first watch. If they move too fast, slow playback to 0.75x.
- Rewatch one episode a week. A second viewing of the same 20 minutes teaches more than a new episode.
- Learn the ladder before you watch. Ten minutes with the realm names saves pausing in every fight.
- Shadow short lines. Courtesy phrases like 见过师兄 or 多谢道友 are perfect for shadowing.
- Move to the novel. Once a show feels easy, read the first chapters of its novel. See cultivation novels by level.
A rough weekly plan: three new episodes, one rewatch and 15 minutes of word review is about 2 hours a week, enough to finish a 26-episode series in two months.
