Best Cultivation Novels for Chinese Learners by Level (2026)
The best cultivation novels for Chinese learners are the ones whose narration stays plain while the genre vocabulary repeats: a modern narrator, lots of dialogue and a clear realm ladder. This list ranks ten xianxia and cultivation novels from easiest to hardest, with author, platform, length, an estimated HSK level and whether an official English translation exists so you can check yourself.
Every title here is native Chinese fiction, so treat the levels as estimates for reading with a pop-up dictionary. Our general Chinese web novels list already covers Battle Through the Heavens, Coiling Dragon, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation and Joy of Life, so none of those appear below.
Quick picks: start with Cultivation Chat Group (修真聊天群), a modern comedy told through a group chat. For a classic sect story with an English translation to check against, read A Will Eternal (一念永恒). Save Sword of Coming (剑来) for HSK 6 and beyond.

What makes a cultivation novel easy or hard?
Three things decide it: the narrator, the setting and the prose style. A narrator from modern China (a transmigrator, or a student in a modern city) thinks in everyday Mandarin and internet slang, which most learners already know. A traditional setting with Daoist mythology adds hundreds of names and titles. And a literary author who writes in four-character phrases and classical allusions is much harder than one who writes short, plain sentences, whatever the plot.
Length works in your favour. Most of these novels run to millions of characters, and the same core vocabulary returns in every chapter. Learn the 40 or so words in our xianxia glossary before you start, and the first 20 chapters get much easier.

Easiest: cultivation novels with modern narrators
Cultivation Chat Group 修真聊天群
University student Song Shuhang is accidentally added to a chat group full of people who call each other "fellow Daoist" and talk about pills and tribulations. He assumes they are role-players with a bad case of 中二病. They are not.
Why it works for learners: Large parts of the book are chat messages and dialogue set in modern China, so the vocabulary is everyday Mandarin with cultivation terms added on top. That makes it the gentlest bridge into the genre. The cast is big and the jokes rely on internet slang, which is useful in itself. Qidian lists it under urban fiction (都市), not 仙侠. An official English translation was published on Webnovel, so you can check difficult chapters. The full novel is enormous, so read the first 100 chapters and decide.
The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System 人渣反派自救系统
Shen Yuan dies furious at the ending of a trashy cultivation web novel and wakes up inside it as Shen Qingqiu, the cruel master who is fated to die horribly at the hands of his own disciple. A 系统 (system) now scores everything he does.
Why it works for learners: It is short by genre standards and narrated by a modern web-novel reader who mocks every cliché, so you learn the tropes (金手指, 打脸, stallion-novel plots) and the slang used to talk about them at the same time. Master and disciple titles appear constantly. Seven Seas published an official English edition in four volumes. It is a male-male romance (danmei).
My Senior Brother Is Too Steady 我师兄实在太稳健了
Li Changshou is a low-level Qi Refining cultivator in the mythic age before the gods were invested. He has no special destiny and one goal: live forever by being extremely, almost absurdly careful. Then his master takes on a new junior disciple.
Why it works for learners: The narration is light and comic, and the protagonist's caution (稳健, 苟) is a running joke you will understand quickly. The harder part is the setting: it draws on 封神 mythology, so you meet names of Daoist deities and sects. Read a short summary of the Investiture of the Gods first. A live-action adaptation, 师兄太稳健, followed in 2026. We could not confirm an official English translation.
Middle: classic sect stories
A Will Eternal 一念永恒
Bai Xiaochun is a village boy whose deepest wish is not to die. He joins a cultivation sect to live forever, and turns out to be a coward, a troublemaker and, now and then, a disaster for everyone around him.
Why it works for learners: This is the best "real xianxia" starting point on the list: a traditional sect setting with the standard terms, written as a comedy. Bai Xiaochun's panicked inner monologue is simple and repetitive in a helpful way. Er Gen is one of the genre's biggest names, so this also prepares you for Renegade Immortal. Wuxiaworld publishes a complete official English translation of 1,321 chapters, licensed from Yuewen. A Tencent Video donghua adapts the opening.
Guardians of the Dafeng 大奉打更人
A police-academy graduate wakes up in a prison cell in an ancient-style empire, three days before he is to be exiled to the frontier. To survive he has to solve the case that put him there, and soon he is investigating far stranger crimes.
Why it works for learners: The narrator is a modern detective who jokes in modern Chinese, and the case-by-case structure gives you natural stopping points. Its world has several power systems at once (Confucian, Daoist, Buddhist, demon and warlock), so the vocabulary is wider than a pure sect story. Poems and official titles add some difficulty. The 2024 drama Guardians of the Dafeng (40 episodes, CCTV-8 and Tencent Video) makes a good listening companion. We could not confirm an official English translation.
A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality 凡人修仙传
Han Li is a poor farm boy with mediocre talent who gets a place in a martial-arts sect almost by chance. With no great destiny on his side, he survives the cultivation world through patience, caution and careful use of whatever he finds.
Why it works for learners: This is the novel that made the standard realm ladder (炼气, 筑基, 结丹, 元婴, 化神) famous, so reading it teaches the genre's core vocabulary better than any other book. The prose is plain and steady, with little humour and few allusions. The pace is slow, which suits learners. The long-running Bilibili donghua and the 2025 live-action series (Youku, also on Netflix in some regions) give you audio. An official English translation is serialized on Wuxiaworld.
Renegade Immortal 仙逆
Wang Lin is a quiet boy from a family of ordinary villagers who gets into a cultivation sect without much talent to speak of. The cultivation world turns out to be far crueller than he imagined, and he starts down a long, solitary road.
Why it works for learners: Er Gen's earlier style is darker and more descriptive than A Will Eternal, with long fights, inner reflection and Daoist ideas about heaven and fate. Its first realm is 凝气 rather than 炼气, a good reminder that ladders vary. Wuxiaworld has a complete official English translation (2,094 chapters), and Tencent Video's 3D donghua began in 2023.
Harder: literary and ensemble cultivation
Zhu Xian 诛仙
Zhang Xiaofan is an ordinary village boy who ends up as a disciple of the great Qingyun Sect (青云门) after his village is attacked. Slow and untalented, he carries a secret that ties him to both the righteous and demonic paths.
Why it works for learners: One of the founding works of the genre, written before the paywalled web-novel boom, so it is short, tightly plotted and much more literary than the Qidian epics: more scenery, more emotion, more four-character phrases. Fans still quote its lines. It has been adapted as the 2016 drama 青云志, a 2019 film and a 2022 donghua. Read it when sect vocabulary feels easy and you want better prose.
Xuanjian Immortal Clan 玄鉴仙族
A man who dies after one too many late nights wakes up as a soul trapped in a cracked bronze mirror. A small farming family by a mountain river picks the mirror up, and over generations it teaches them the ways of the immortals.
Why it works for learners: This is a recent favourite of the "family cultivation" (家族修仙) subgenre and a big change from the lone-hero formula. The cast spans generations, so you need family terms (see our guide to sect and family titles), and the prose leans formal and strategic. Keep a name list. We could not confirm an official English translation. Because it is still being serialized, the length keeps growing.
Sword of Coming 剑来
Chen Ping'an is a poor orphan from a small, strange town where ancient powers have hidden for centuries. When the town's seal begins to open, outsiders arrive, and the boy starts a journey that tests what kind of person he wants to be.
Why it works for learners: Widely praised for its writing, and hard because of it: long, reflective passages on Confucian ethics and Daoist ideas, classical allusions, poetry, and a huge cast. It is the hardest book here and one of the longest. Watch the Tencent Video donghua (26 episodes, 2024) first to get the characters straight, then read with a dictionary. We could not confirm an official English translation.
How to choose your first cultivation novel
- Below HSK 4: do not start here. Read graded readers first, or watch a cultivation donghua with Chinese subtitles.
- HSK 4–5, want fun: Cultivation Chat Group or The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System.
- HSK 5, want a classic sect story: A Will Eternal, then A Record of a Mortal's Journey to Immortality.
- HSK 5, prefer plot to cultivation: Guardians of the Dafeng.
- HSK 6 and up: Zhu Xian for prose, Xuanjian Immortal Clan for strategy, Sword of Coming for a literary marathon.
Use the first-chapter test. If you need more than one lookup per line in chapter 1 even with a pop-up dictionary, go one step easier. If you can follow the plot with five to ten lookups per chapter, you are in the right place.
A four-week starter plan
| Week | Daily time | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 30 min | Learn the realm ladder and 25 core words. Read chapters 1–5 slowly with a pop-up dictionary. |
| 2 | 30–45 min | Two chapters a day. Look up only words that repeat or block the plot. |
| 3 | 45 min | Two or three chapters a day. Reread chapter 1 at the end of the week and time it. |
| 4 | 45–60 min | Read for the story. Check a difficult chapter against the English translation if one exists. |
That is about 20 hours in a month. Most learners report that reading speed climbs noticeably somewhere between chapters 30 and 50, once names and genre words stop needing lookups. Our step-by-step guide to reading Chinese web novels covers apps, dictionaries and how to handle 2,000-chapter series.
