Is Heaven Official's Blessing good for learning Chinese?

天官赐福

Add to my list

Yes, once you are advanced and comfortable with fantasy language. Heaven Official's Blessing packs classical and mythic terms into short episodes, so it works as focused practice, though it offers little vocabulary for everyday conversation.

Why it works for learners

At about 25 minutes an episode and 23 episodes in total, this is a manageable way into the language of gods, ghosts and old kingdoms. Celestial ranks, temple offerings and spirit-world terms recur, so you begin to recognise them. Its elegant, slightly literary lines also train your ear for a more formal register. Few intermediate resources use this vocabulary, which makes it a useful follow-up for fans of the source novel wanting to read in Chinese.

What makes it hard

Titles and terms drawn from religion and classical language can defeat even strong learners, and homophones make them hard to catch by ear. Long backstory scenes assume you can keep timelines straight. Very little of this vocabulary will come up outside the genre.

How to use it

Watch with Chinese subtitles and keep a glossary of ranks and spirit-world terms from the first three episodes. Rewatch any episode that leaves you confused before moving on. With only 23 episodes, finishing the whole series twice is realistic.
