Is Scissor Seven good for learning Chinese?

Only if you are advanced, or happy to miss many of the jokes. Scissor Seven runs on fast comedy and wordplay, so its 15-minute episodes look easier than they are. Short length is its main advantage for serious listening practice.

Why it works for learners

Episodes of about 15 minutes let you replay a whole story without losing an evening. Comedy forces you to catch exact wording, since a joke fails if you only get the gist, and that makes this good training for sharp listening. A hapless assassin taking cheap jobs on a small island brings a mix of everyday talk and silly situations, and the visual gags give you a break when the language gets ahead of you.

What makes it hard

Puns and rapid punchlines are the toughest thing in any language, and here they arrive quickly. Parody and references may also pass you by. You can enjoy the slapstick while understanding little of what is said, so do not take laughing as proof you followed it.

How to use it

Watch one episode, then replay it with Chinese subtitles and mark each joke you missed. Work out why it is funny. Do this for three or four episodes, then watch new ones straight through and see how many jokes land without help.
