Learn Korean with Goblin: Folklore Words, Level and Plan
To learn Korean with Goblin is to pick up two things at once: modern, comic conversational Korean and the vocabulary of Korean folklore, from goblins and grim reapers to the goddess of birth. The modern scenes are intermediate; the Goryeo-era flashbacks are a first taste of historical speech. This guide gives you the level, 29 words that recur in the show, register notes and a 16-episode plan with hours.
Short answer: Goblin (쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 – 도깨비) is an intermediate drama, about TOPIK 3–4. It has 16 episodes of 60–90 minutes, roughly 20 hours. Learn the folklore words below before episode 2, watch with Korean subtitles from there, and treat the historical flashbacks as listening practice, not speech to copy.

Is Goblin good for learning Korean?
Yes, for intermediate learners. Kim Shin was a general in the Goryeo dynasty, and for more than 900 years he has lived as an immortal goblin, a 도깨비, with a sword in his chest that only his bride can remove. In modern Seoul he meets Ji Eun-tak, a 19-year-old high school student who can see ghosts, and ends up sharing his house with a Grim Reaper who has no memory of his own past.
Most of the dialogue is modern and casual, and the comic scenes between the goblin and the reaper are slow enough to follow. The folklore vocabulary is the bonus: these words come back in webtoons, web novels and sageuk dramas. It's also on our list of K-dramas for intermediate learners.
| Goblin | |
|---|---|
| Korean title | 쓸쓸하고 찬란하神 – 도깨비 (Sseulsseulhago Challanhasin – Dokkaebi); English title Guardian: The Lonely and Great God |
| Network and years | tvN, December 2016 to January 2017 |
| Episodes | 16 plus 3 specials, about 60–90 minutes each (roughly 20 hours) |
| Director and writer | Directed by Lee Eung-bok, written by Kim Eun-sook |
| Level (estimate) | Intermediate, TOPIK 3–4 |
| Speech | Modern conversational Korean with comic bickering; Goryeo-era flashbacks in historical style |
| Vocabulary domains | Korean folklore and the afterlife, fate and memory, a high schooler's life |
| Hardest part | Historical flashbacks and the poetic, voice-over lines |
The title is a pun. 찬란하신 means "radiant" (with an honorific -시-), and the final syllable 신 is written with the Chinese character 神, "god." It's a small lesson in how Koreans play with Hanja.
What makes Goblin hard for learners
- Historical flashbacks. Scenes from the Goryeo court use old-style speech and royal address. They're short, and English subtitles are fine for them on a first pass.
- Poetic voice-overs. Kim Eun-sook's scripts like reflective narration about fate and memory. These lines use literary vocabulary and are slower but denser than the dialogue.
- Folklore concepts. If you don't know what a 저승사자 does or who 삼신 is, some scenes make little sense. Learn the first table below and they will.
- Episode 1 is a double episode. The first two episodes run about 90 minutes and cover a lot of backstory. Watch episode 1 with English subtitles; the modern-day Korean from episode 2 on is easier.

Register notes: modern and historical Korean
Goblin is a good contrast study. In the modern scenes, Eun-tak speaks polite -요 speech to Kim Shin (he's 939 years older, after all) but treats him with very little awe, while he answers in banmal. The goblin and the reaper bicker like an old couple, mostly in casual Korean that's easy to shadow.
In the flashbacks, people speak in a historical style with royal titles and old-fashioned endings. Learn to recognize it, because sageuk dramas use much more of it, but don't copy it: in modern Korean it sounds like a costume. Our guide to historical K-dramas for learners explains palace speech in detail.
How to learn Korean with Goblin: a 16-episode plan
One viewing is about 20 hours. With rewatching and review, budget 30 hours, or about seven weeks at four hours a week.
| Episodes | Subtitles | Focus | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | English | Backstory and the folklore setup; learn the first vocabulary table | About 1.5 h |
| 2–5 | Korean | Modern scenes: Eun-tak's life, the shared house; shadow one goblin–reaper exchange per episode | About 5 h + 1.5 h review |
| 6–10 | Korean | Fate and memory words; let flashbacks pass with English if they're too dense | About 6 h + 2 h review |
| 11–14 | Korean | Listen for speech-level shifts between Eun-tak, Kim Shin and the reaper | About 5 h + 1.5 h review |
| 15–16 | Korean, then none | Finish the story; rewatch a modern-day episode without subtitles | About 2.5 h + 1.5 h rewatch |
The 3 specials sit outside the main story and are optional, though they make easy extra listening once you know the characters.
What to watch after Goblin
- Mr. Sunshine (미스터 션샤인, tvN, 2018, 24 episodes). Also by Kim Eun-sook, set at the turn of the 20th century. Much harder historical Korean, TOPIK 5 and up.
- Crash Landing on You (사랑의 불시착, tvN, 2019–2020). Another big romantic hit at the same level, with North Korean dialect instead of folklore. See our Crash Landing on You guide.
- Sageuk dramas. If the flashbacks were your favorite part, our historical K-drama list starts with the easiest ones.

Frequently asked questions
Is Goblin good for learning Korean?
Yes, for intermediate learners around TOPIK 3–4. Most of the dialogue is modern and conversational, and the show teaches Korean folklore words that come up in many webtoons and dramas. The historical flashbacks are harder and are best treated as listening practice.
What does dokkaebi mean?
Dokkaebi (도깨비) is a Korean folk spirit, usually translated as goblin. In folklore they are mischievous rather than evil and often reward good people.
How many episodes does Goblin have?
Sixteen episodes plus three specials, aired on tvN from December 2016 to January 2017. Episodes run about 60 to 90 minutes, roughly 20 hours in total.
What level of Korean do I need for Goblin?
About TOPIK 3 to follow the modern scenes with Korean subtitles. The flashbacks and voice-overs are closer to TOPIK 5, so use English subtitles for them on a first pass if needed.
What is the difference between 이승 and 저승?
이승 (iseung) is this world, the world of the living, and 저승 (jeoseung) is the afterlife. A grim reaper is a 저승사자, a messenger of the afterlife.
