Learn Korean with Webtoon Adaptations: Read, Then Watch
Learning Korean with webtoon adaptations means reading a webtoon first and then watching the drama made from it, so you already know the story and the key lines when you hear them. It turns a drama that would be too fast into listening you can follow. This guide pairs ten webtoons with their dramas, with episode counts and networks checked against each show's record, a level estimate for each pair, and a routine for using them together.
Best pairs to start with: Yumi's Cells (now three seasons, the newest from 2026), Itaewon Class (the webtoon's author wrote the drama), and Business Proposal (a short, 12-episode office rom-com). For something darker, try Pyramid Game.

Webtoon and drama pairs at a glance
Webtoon episode counts are from Naver Webtoon and Kakao as of October 21, 2026. Drama details are each series' broadcast or release record. Levels are our estimates for the webtoon; the drama is usually half a level to a level harder, because speech is fast.

Why read the webtoon before watching the drama?
Because it lets you spend your listening attention on Korean instead of on the plot. When you already know who likes whom and what happens next, you can listen for how a line is said, catch endings you'd normally miss, and notice how written casual speech sounds out loud. Reading also gives you the vocabulary in advance: a word you looked up on the page is far easier to catch in fast speech.
It works in the other order too, but less well. Watching first spoils the webtoon's suspense, and you'll tend to skim the pages for scenes you remember. Dramas also compress and change their source, so treat the webtoon as preparation, not a transcript.
The easiest pairs
Yumi's Cells 유미의 세포들
Office worker Yumi navigates work, dating and heartbreak while the tiny cells in her head, from the Love Cell to the Hungry Cell, argue over every decision.
Why it works for learners: The cells say out loud what Yumi feels, so you get emotion vocabulary twice: in the bubble and in her actions. The drama keeps the cells as 3D animation alongside live action, which makes the jump from page to screen unusually smooth. Season 3 premiered on TVING in April 2026 with eight episodes, shortened from a planned 14 because the source had less material left to adapt. Our best webtoons list covers the webtoon itself; here, read an arc, then watch the matching drama episodes.
My ID Is Gangnam Beauty 내 ID는 강남미인!
Kang Mi-rae was teased about her looks for years. She has plastic surgery before starting university, only to find that a new face brings new judgments, starting with the label "Gangnam beauty," slang for a face made by surgery.
Why it works for learners: At 87 episodes, it's the shortest webtoon here, so you can finish it in a month and then watch the whole drama. The setting is first-year university life, with seniors, clubs and group chats, and the vocabulary of appearance and self-image. The drama's Korean title spells out 아이디 where the webtoon writes "ID."
Navillera 나빌레라
A 70-year-old retired man finally starts ballet, with a 23-year-old dancer as his reluctant teacher.
Why it works for learners: It's slow and dialogue-led on both page and screen, which makes it ideal listening practice. The drama lets you hear the honorifics between generations that the webtoon shows in writing: the young teacher's careful politeness, the old man's mix of respect and stubbornness. The 12-episode drama is on Netflix in many regions; check yours.
Romance and office pairs
True Beauty 여신강림
Lim Ju-kyung masters makeup, transfers schools and becomes the "goddess" of her new class, while hiding her bare face from everyone.
Why it works for learners: High school banmal, slang and beauty vocabulary, in a story you can follow from the faces alone. The webtoon is much longer than the drama, and the drama aired while the webtoon was still running, so read the first arcs and then watch rather than trying to finish all 261 episodes first. Yaongyi has said she drew the male lead, Lee Su-ho, with Cha Eun-woo in mind, and he went on to play the role.
What's Wrong with Secretary Kim 김비서가 왜 그럴까
Kim Mi-so has been the perfect secretary to a self-absorbed company vice chairman for nine years. When she announces she's quitting, he can't understand why, and sets out to keep her.
Why it works for learners: This is the template for office rom-coms, and it's full of the language of hierarchy: titles like 부회장님 (vice chairman), formal reports, and a boss who talks about himself in grand terms. Hearing a secretary's polished -습니다 speech next to the boss's casual arrogance is a clear lesson in register.
Business Proposal 사내 맞선
Shin Ha-ri goes on a blind date in her friend's place, planning to be so unpleasant that the man rejects her. The man turns out to be her company's new CEO.
Why it works for learners: The Korean title means "an in-company arranged date" (사내, within the company, plus 맞선, a formal blind date). Ha-ri switches between her real self and a fake persona, so you hear two voices from one character. At 12 episodes, the drama is easy to finish; it's on Netflix in selected regions.
See You in My 19th Life 이번 생도 잘 부탁해
Ban Ji-eum remembers all of her previous 18 lives. In her 19th, she sets out to find Moon Seo-ha, the man she loved in her last life, who has never stopped feeling guilty about losing her.
Why it works for learners: The Korean title is an everyday phrase, 잘 부탁해 ("please take care of me," said when starting something together), with 이번 생도 ("this life too") in front. Expect words like 전생 (past life). Naver also has a free five-episode side story, and the drama streams on Netflix and TVING in selected regions.
Harder pairs for upper intermediate learners
Itaewon Class 이태원 클라쓰
Park Sae-ro-yi's life is upended by a clash with the heir of a powerful food company. Years later, he opens a small bar in Itaewon and sets out to beat the company on its own ground.
Why it works for learners: The webtoon's author, Jo Kwang-jin, also wrote the drama, so it's one of the closest page-to-screen pairs you'll find. The Korean includes speeches, negotiations and restaurant business vocabulary on top of everyday talk. On Kakao, it had 10 free episodes and the rest on wait-for-free when we checked.
Pyramid Game 피라미드 게임
A transfer student at a girls' high school discovers a class popularity vote that ranks every student and decides who can be bullied. She lands at the bottom and decides to break the game.
Why it works for learners: It's a psychological thriller built on rules, votes and rankings, so you'll learn words for grades, alliances and fairness. The dialogue is sharp and often cruel, all teenage banmal. The drama is short at 10 episodes and streams on TVING, with Viu and Paramount+ in selected regions.
Daily Dose of Sunshine 정신병동에도 아침이 와요
Jung Da-eun, a nurse, transfers from internal medicine to a hospital's psychiatric ward and learns to care for patients there. The webtoon draws on its author's own experience as a nurse.
Why it works for learners: The title means "morning comes to the psychiatric ward too," with the useful -에도 ("even in, also in"). It teaches hospital and mental health vocabulary that's hard to find elsewhere, explained gently through patients' stories. It's the hardest pair here because of the medical terms, but each episode centers on one patient, which keeps it manageable.

A read-then-watch routine
- Find where the drama episode starts and ends in the webtoon. Fan wikis and episode recaps usually make this clear. A 16-episode drama often covers far fewer webtoon episodes than the series has.
- Read that stretch during the week, 20–30 minutes a day, using the two-pass method from how to learn Korean from webtoons.
- Watch the drama episode on the weekend with Korean subtitles if your platform offers them. You'll know the story, so the subtitles become reading practice at speech speed. Our guide to when to switch to Korean subtitles helps you judge if you're ready.
- Rewatch one key scene without subtitles and shadow two or three lines.
A week like that is about three hours of reading plus one to two hours of listening, all from one story. If you prefer to start from the drama side, see our K-dramas for intermediate learners.

Frequently asked questions
Which Korean dramas are based on webtoons?
Many popular ones, including Yumi's Cells, True Beauty, Itaewon Class, What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, Business Proposal, Navillera, Misaeng, Moving, Sweet Home and Pyramid Game.
Should I read the webtoon or watch the drama first?
For learning Korean, read the webtoon first. Knowing the story and vocabulary in advance makes the drama much easier to follow, so you can focus on how the lines sound.
Is Yumi's Cells good for learning Korean?
Yes, at around TOPIK 3. The cells spell out Yumi's feelings in short, everyday sentences, and the drama keeps the cells as animation, which makes it one of the easiest webtoon and drama pairs.
Do webtoon dramas follow the original story?
Some stay close and some change a lot. Itaewon Class was written by the webtoon's own author, while long webtoons like True Beauty are compressed into 16 episodes, so read the part each drama episode covers.
