Learn Chinese with Love Between Fairy and Devil: Key Words
To learn Chinese with Love Between Fairy and Devil (苍兰诀, Cāng Lán Jué), you need less than you'd expect for a fantasy drama. Much of the dialogue is light, bickering comedy in near-modern Mandarin, with a small set of xianxia words layered on top. This guide covers the level, those words, the arrogant way the demon lord talks and a plan for the 36 episodes.
Short answer: it's an upper-intermediate show, about HSK 4–5 by our estimate, and one of the easiest xianxia dramas for learners. Learn about a dozen world terms (realms, tribes, the curse, titles) and most episodes become everyday romance and comedy Chinese. Watch with Chinese subtitles from the start.

What is Love Between Fairy and Devil, and what level is it?
Love Between Fairy and Devil 苍兰诀
Xiao Lanhua is a lowly orchid fairy with barely any magic. By accident she frees Dongfang Qingcang, the feared ruler of the Moon Tribe, who has been sealed away for thirty thousand years, and a curse binds the two of them together. Neither can shake the other off until they find a way to break it.
Why it works for learners: the two leads spend the early episodes arguing, threatening and bargaining, and that kind of dialogue is short, emotional and repetitive. The fantasy vocabulary is small and always shown on screen: you see the curse work, so you learn the word for it without a dictionary. The hard parts are the set-piece speeches about fate and duty and a few late-story reveals told in denser, more literary Chinese.
The series stars Yu Shuxin (Esther Yu) as Xiao Lanhua and Dylan Wang as Dongfang Qingcang. It aired on iQIYI from August to September 2022 and reached Netflix in many regions that September. Availability changes, so check your region. The novel has an official English translation from Seven Seas.
Is Love Between Fairy and Devil good for learning Chinese?
Yes. It's probably the best first xianxia drama for a learner, for three reasons:
- The comedy is in modern speech. Xiao Lanhua talks like a cheerful, slightly scatterbrained young woman today, not like a classical heroine. You'll hear plenty of 怎么办, 完了 and 你干什么.
- The world is small. Two main realms, two main peoples and one curse. Compare that with the five clans of The Untamed.
- The curse makes vocabulary visible. When one of them gets hurt, the other feels it. Words like 疼 and 受伤 come with a physical reaction every time.
What makes it harder than a campus drama: the fantasy terms, some fast shouting in fight scenes, and an older register for titles and self-reference. If it still feels too hard, try a modern romance from our beginner C-drama list first and come back.

What does 本座 mean? Register notes for the show
本座 (běnzuò) is a lofty "I" used by someone who sits above everyone else: literally "this seat." Dongfang Qingcang uses it constantly, and it does a lot of characterization in two syllables. Listen for the moments he uses a plain 我 instead. In costume dramas, a switch like that usually marks a change in mood or closeness.
It belongs to a family of self-references you'll meet across costume dramas:
- 本座 for a sect leader or demon lord, 本王 (běnwáng) for a prince, 本宫 (běngōng) for an empress or consort and 朕 (zhèn) for an emperor only.
- Humble forms go the other way: 小仙 for a lesser immortal, 在下 for a polite stranger, 奴婢 for a maid.
None of these belongs in real conversation. Saying 本座 to a Chinese friend is a joke, and it does work as one, because people know it from dramas. For the court versions, see our Story of Yanxi Palace guide.
The rest of the show's Chinese is close to modern. Sentence-final particles (啊, 呢, 吧) carry most of the comedy, so they are worth listening for: the same sentence with 吧 is a suggestion, and with 啊 it's an exasperated complaint.
A study plan for all 36 episodes
Thirty-six episodes of about 45 minutes is roughly 27 hours of viewing, or 40 to 45 hours with replays and review. The thirds below are approximate.
| Stage | Episodes (approx.) | Language focus | How to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| The curse comedy | First third | Threats, bargaining, insults, pain words | Chinese subtitles; pause and shadow two or three short lines per episode |
| Changing sides and growing feelings | Middle third | Romance vocabulary, plans, trickery | Watch an episode straight through, then replay one scene |
| Fate, war and reveals | Final third | Speeches, backstory, more literary lines | Allow more pauses; read the episode summary afterwards |
At four episodes a week (about three hours), you finish in nine weeks. For a final check, rewatch episode 1 at the end: it's a quick and honest measure of how far your listening has come.
Common mistake: looking up every immortal-world name. Most are labels you'll understand from context. Spend your lookups on verbs and everyday words that will carry over to other dramas.
Similar dramas to watch next
- Till the End of the Moon (长月烬明, Youku, 2023, 40 episodes): another xianxia romance with a demon-world lead, slightly darker and harder.
- Eternal Love (三生三世十里桃花, 2017): the classic of the genre, covered in our costume drama list.
- The Untamed (陈情令, 2019): the next step up, with denser clan vocabulary and semi-classical speech.
