The best danmei novels for Chinese learners aren't the famous ones first. Danmei (耽美), Chinese fiction about romance between men, is the reason many people start Chinese. Its most famous books, though, are xianxia epics at HSK 5–6. This list ranks nine real novels from easiest to hardest, with the drama or donghua for each, so you can listen your way in before you read.

Quick picks: for a first danmei novel at HSK 4–5, read A Certain Someone (某某), a modern school story. For MXTX, start with Scum Villain, the lightest of the three. For the classics (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, Heaven Official's Blessing), watch the adaptation first, then read. Levels are our estimates.

This list is learner-focused and keeps descriptions non-explicit. Many danmei novels include mature scenes and themes, and versions on Jinjiang have been edited over the years, so content can differ between editions.

Modern settings are much easier than cultivation worlds, because their vocabulary overlaps with everyday Chinese and with the dramas you may already watch. Start modern even if xianxia is what you love; the jump to MXTX will feel smaller afterwards.

Modern danmei: the easiest place to start

A Certain Someone 某某

  • Upper intermediate (HSK 4–5)
  • Mu Su Li (木苏里)
  • Jinjiang, from 2019
  • Modern high school

Jiang Tian is a top student who keeps to himself. Sheng Wang is a confident new transfer student, and the two have a history that goes back further than their new classroom.

Why it works for learners: It's set in a Chinese high school, so the vocabulary is exams, classes, homework, teachers and family: the same world as many beginner C-dramas, now in print. The prose is light and the chapters are short. It's the gentlest first danmei novel on this list. An English edition has been licensed by Hai Tang Books if you want to check yourself.

Run Wild: Sa Ye 撒野

  • Upper intermediate (HSK 4–5)
  • Wu Zhe (巫哲)
  • Jinjiang, from 2016
  • 145 chapters plus extras
  • Modern, small-town coming of age

Jiang Cheng, a troubled teenager, is sent to live in a run-down northern town. There he meets Gu Fei, a classmate who works to hold his struggling family together.

Why it works for learners: Most of the book is everyday conversation: school, family, money and friendship. The catch is register. The dialogue is very colloquial northern speech, with slang, teasing and plenty of swearing, which is great for listening-style reading but different from textbook Chinese. Seven Seas published the full English translation as Run Wild: Sa Ye. A live-action adaptation was filmed but has not been released.

Modern fantasy and crime

The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System 人渣反派自救系统

  • Intermediate to advanced (HSK 5)
  • Mo Xiang Tong Xiu (墨香铜臭)
  • Jinjiang, 2014–2015
  • Donghua: Tencent Video, 2020, 10 episodes
  • Comedy, xianxia parody

A man who spent years mocking a bad web novel dies and wakes up inside it, as the villain fated to be destroyed by the hero. A "system" in his head hands out points and penalties as he tries to change the plot.

Why it works for learners: The narrator thinks in modern internet Chinese, so you get web-novel slang (系统, 穿书, 原著) alongside the cultivation-sect setting. That mix makes it the easiest of MXTX's three novels, and the genre jokes teach you how Chinese web fiction works. The short donghua, released in Chinese as 穿书自救指南, is a quick listening companion. The English edition is from Seven Seas.

Guardian 镇魂

  • Intermediate to advanced (HSK 5)
  • Priest
  • 2012
  • Drama: Youku, 2018, 40 episodes
  • Modern urban fantasy

Zhao Yunlan heads a secret government unit that handles crimes involving the supernatural. A quiet, mysterious professor, Shen Wei, keeps turning up in his cases, and seems to know far more about him than he should.

Why it works for learners: The setting is a modern city, so the base vocabulary is office, police and university Chinese, with a layer of mythology on top. The 2018 drama starring Bai Yu and Zhu Yilong is a loose adaptation that turned the romance into a deep friendship. It was briefly pulled from Youku that year and later returned. Watch the drama first, then read: the plots differ enough that the novel still surprises. Seven Seas publishes it in English.

Silent Reading 默读

  • Advanced (HSK 5–6)
  • Priest
  • Jinjiang, from 2016
  • 180 chapters plus extras
  • Crime thriller

Luo Wenzhou leads a city police criminal investigation team. A string of cases keeps pointing back to Fei Du, a sharp, wealthy young man with a dark family past.

Why it works for learners: This is the pick for learners who want crime and psychology vocabulary: investigations, interrogations, evidence and motive. The prose is denser than the modern picks above, and the subject matter is mature. A loose 30-episode adaptation, Justice in the Dark (光·渊), came out on Youku in 2023, with a changed sci-fi setting. Seven Seas began publishing the English edition in December 2025.

Xianxia and wuxia danmei: the classics

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation 魔道祖师

  • Advanced (HSK 5–6)
  • Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
  • Jinjiang, 2015–2016
  • Adaptations: The Untamed (2019, 50 episodes); donghua (2018–2021, 35 episodes)
  • Xianxia, mystery

Wei Wuxian, remembered as the founder of a feared dark path, is brought back to life years after his death. He meets Lan Wangji again, an old acquaintance from a strict rival clan, and the two investigate a mystery rooted in the past.

Why it works for learners: It has the best-known adaptation in the genre, so you can learn the world by ear before you read. The narration is modern and often funny, while dialogue and clan rules are semi-classical. See our guide to learning Chinese with The Untamed for 40 words that carry straight over to the novel.

Heaven Official's Blessing 天官赐福

  • Advanced (HSK 5–6)
  • Mo Xiang Tong Xiu
  • Jinjiang, 2017–2018
  • 244 chapters
  • Donghua: Bilibili, 2020 and 2023, 2 seasons
  • Xianxia, gods and ghosts

Xie Lian, once a beloved crown prince who became a god, has been banished from heaven twice and is mocked as the realm's biggest joke. When he ascends a third time, he meets a ghost king whose interest in him nobody can explain.

Why it works for learners: Its vocabulary is gods, temples, offerings, ghosts and Buddhist and Taoist concepts, a different set from the clan-cultivation world of the other MXTX books. It's also the longest of the three. The donghua is beautifully made and a good listening start. A live-action version, Eternal Faith, began production in 2021; check its current status before you go looking for it. The English edition from Seven Seas runs to eight volumes.

Faraway Wanderers 天涯客

  • Advanced (HSK 6)
  • Priest
  • Jinjiang, 2010–2011
  • 77 chapters plus extras
  • Drama: Word of Honor (山河令), Youku, 2021, 36 episodes
  • Wuxia

Zhou Zishu, a former spymaster who has left his old life behind, wanders the martial world in disguise. A dangerous, flirtatious stranger, Wen Kexing, attaches himself to him as rival factions hunt for a legendary secret.

Why it works for learners: Wuxia, not xianxia: martial arts sects, schools and techniques, with older, terser prose than Priest's modern books. It's short for a danmei novel, so it's manageable at HSK 6. Word of Honor was a huge hit before it was pulled from Chinese streaming platforms in August 2021 over a scandal involving one of its leads; it has been available abroad on several services, so check your region.

Thousand Autumns 千秋

  • Advanced (HSK 6+)
  • Meng Xi Shi (梦溪石)
  • Jinjiang, from 2015
  • 128 chapters plus extras
  • Donghua: 山河剑心, Tencent Video, 2021, 16 episodes
  • Historical wuxia

Shen Qiao, the kind-hearted leading disciple of the Taoist sect on Mount Xuandu, loses a duel and falls from a cliff, close to death. Yan Wushi, the ruthless leader of a rival sect, finds him and decides to see whether such a good man can be turned.

Why it works for learners: The hardest pick here. Its historical setting brings court politics, rival sects, Taoist and Buddhist philosophy and the most classical-flavored prose on this list. Save it for HSK 6 and up, and use the short donghua to learn the names first. The English edition is from Seven Seas.

Why are danmei dramas different from the novels?

Because Chinese broadcast rules don't allow same-sex romance on screen. Since a web drama was pulled in 2016, adaptations have recast the central couple as sworn friends or 知己 (kindred spirits). Fans call these adaptations 耽改 (dāngǎi). Guardian, The Untamed and Word of Honor all work this way.

From 2021, regulators tightened rules further, and several finished danmei dramas, such as Immortality, based on Husky and His White Cat Shizun, have not been released. For learners, this means two things. First, the dramas are a great way to learn a novel's world and names, but expect real plot changes. Second, Jinjiang has edited or locked some novels over the years, and it renamed its danmei section 纯爱 (chún'ài, "pure love"), so the version you read may differ from older fan translations.

How to read danmei in Chinese

  • Read on Jinjiang. Most of these novels were first published on Jinjiang Literature City (晋江文学城). Early chapters are usually free and later ones are paid VIP chapters. Some chapters are locked or edited, so expect gaps.
  • Pair with the English edition. Seven Seas publishes official translations of most picks here. Read a chapter in Chinese, then check the matching English passage for anything you missed.
  • Listen first. Watch the drama or donghua, or try an audio drama, before you read. Knowing the names and the world removes half the difficulty of chapter one.
  • Use a pop-up dictionary. Reading on a phone or browser with a pop-up dictionary keeps lookups fast. Allow yourself a few per page and skip the rest.
  • Go from modern to classical. The table above is a reading order. Each step adds a new layer (fantasy, crime, cultivation, wuxia) on top of what you already know.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest danmei novel to read in Chinese?

Modern school stories are the easiest. A Certain Someone (某某) by Mu Su Li is a good first choice at about HSK 4 to 5. Among the famous fantasy titles, The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System is the lightest.

Can I read MXTX in Chinese as a learner?

Yes, from about HSK 5. Start with The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, then Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, and watch the adaptations first so you already know the names and the world.

Why is The Untamed different from the novel?

Chinese broadcast rules do not allow same-sex romance on screen, so danmei adaptations present the leads as close friends and change parts of the plot.

Where can I read danmei novels in Chinese legally?

Most are published on Jinjiang Literature City, where early chapters are often free and later chapters are paid. Official English editions from publishers such as Seven Seas are useful for checking your understanding.

What HSK level do you need to read danmei?

About HSK 4 to 5 for modern school or small-town stories, and HSK 5 to 6 or above for xianxia and wuxia classics like Heaven Official's Blessing or Thousand Autumns.
