Is Swallowed Star good for learning Chinese?

吞噬星空

Add to my list

Yes, at intermediate level, if sci-fi action appeals. Swallowed Star combines science fiction and martial terms with fairly clear speech, and its story of training against monsters is simple enough to follow while you get used to the genre's words.

Why it works for learners

Clear delivery is the main benefit here, as the speakers are generally easy to catch and each episode is only about 21 minutes. A young man training to protect humanity means you hear repeated talk of ranks, tests, schools and missions, with family scenes in between. Since the setting is modern Earth at the start, some of the talk stays nearer daily life than in pure fantasy, and with some 250 episodes listed, you will not run out soon.

What makes it hard

Invented technology and martial terms make up much of the vocabulary, and little of it will help in ordinary conversation. Long fights cut down the amount of speech. A series of this length can become passive background noise if you stop paying attention to the language.

How to use it

Watch two or three episodes a week with Chinese subtitles. Learn the repeated ranks and training words in the first ten episodes. Then listen for family and school scenes, which contain the most useful language, and rewatch those rather than the fights.
