Is BearTalk good for learning Chinese?

Add to my list

Yes, at intermediate level, if technology and design interest you. BearTalk is not a language course: host Bear Liu has talked about creativity, technology and personal growth since 2012, and listings call it bilingual, so check that an episode is in Chinese first.

Why it works for learners

This is native content, which is what sets it apart from learner shows. Nobody grades the language for you, but you hear natural conversation on subjects that interest working adults. With over 600 episodes in its feed, you can pick topics you already know from your own job or hobbies, and that background knowledge does a lot of the work. Technology, design and career vocabulary rarely appear in learner podcasts, so this fills a real gap.

What makes it hard

Long conversations with no adjusted pace can be tiring, and specialist words appear without explanation. Since the show is described as bilingual, some episodes may be in another language or mix languages. You should not expect transcripts or learner notes here.

How to use it

Scan the feed for a Chinese episode on a topic from your own field. Listen in chunks of ten minutes and replay anything you lost. Save the terms you would use at work. Try one episode a week alongside easier learner podcasts.
