Is Learning Chinese through Stories good for learning Chinese?

Add to my list

Yes, for beginners who are ready for Chinese-only audio. This is a podcast made for learners: two narrators, Rui and Simeng, tell graded stories slowly, and you can start at the lower levels and work up over hundreds of episodes.

Why it works for learners

Unlike native podcasts, the language here is chosen for you. Episodes are graded by level, and the narrators read and discuss a short story, explaining words in Chinese with almost no English. A story gives new words context, so you remember them better than from word lists. With more than 400 episodes in the feed, you can stay at one level for a long time before moving up.

What makes it hard

Near-total Chinese is the challenge: there is little English to fall back on, so absolute beginners may feel lost at first. Reading along with the stories and explanations has been reserved for paying patrons, so check what is free now.

How to use it

Pick a story at the lowest level and listen to it three times across a week: once for the gist, once pausing on new words, once while doing chores. Move up a level only when a new story at your level feels easy.
