Why it works for learners
At novella length, this is a much smaller climb than Cien años de soledad. Written like an investigation into an event everyone already knows about, it gives you a reason to keep reading other than the ending. You get reported speech and past tenses in great variety, since a narrator pieces together what different witnesses said. That makes it an excellent book for studying how Spanish handles time and hearsay.
What makes it hard
The timeline jumps around constantly, and many townspeople appear briefly with their own memories. Sentences can be long and rich, and some Caribbean or dated vocabulary may need looking up. Short does not mean easy, and the conditional and subjunctive forms take close reading.
How to use it
Read it in several short sittings and keep brief notes on who said what. Mark sentences with reported speech, then rewrite one or two in simpler Spanish. Read it a second time, since you will notice much more when you are not decoding.
