Learn Korean with Squid Game: Words, Games and Level
You can learn Korean with Squid Game, but it teaches a very particular slice of the language: children's games, money and debt, numbers, and the rough banmal of strangers under pressure. This guide gives you its level, the 30-plus words the show repeats most, what to copy and what not to, and a season-by-season study plan with hours.
Short answer: Squid Game (오징어 게임) is an intermediate show, about TOPIK 3–4. Season 1 has 9 episodes (about 8 hours); all three seasons have 22. Its vocabulary is narrow and repetitive, which helps, but much of the speech is rude banmal you shouldn't copy. Watch season 1 with Korean subtitles after episode 1.

Is Squid Game good for learning Korean?
Yes, with limits. Seong Gi-hun, a divorced, broke chauffeur deep in debt, accepts an invitation to play children's games for a huge cash prize, and finds out what losing means. The setup repeats every episode: an announcement, a game, a vote or a fight. That repetition is the show's strength for learners. You hear the same few dozen words so many times that they stick without flashcards.
The limits are register and range. The players speak to each other in blunt, often vulgar banmal, and the vocabulary rarely leaves games, money and fear. Use it as a fun, intense listening block, not as your model for how to talk.

What makes Squid Game hard, and what makes it easy
- Easy: the games explain themselves. You see each game played, so you understand the words even before you know them.
- Easy: numbers everywhere. Players are known by numbers read in Sino-Korean, so 456 is 사백오십육 번 (sabaek osimnyuk beon). It's the best number drill on Netflix.
- Hard: crowd scenes. When the dorm erupts, dozens of people shout at once. Don't try to follow every voice; rewatch the scene with subtitles if you need to.
- Hard: rough speech. Swearing and insults are frequent. Recognize them, but leave them out of your own Korean.
- Episode 1 is the slowest. The first half is Gi-hun's daily life in Seoul (his mother, his daughter, his debts), with the most everyday Korean in the season. It's harder than the game episodes because the vocabulary is wider, so give it English subtitles if needed.

Speech and register notes
Squid Game is a good lesson in how fast Korean drops politeness when hierarchy breaks down. Strangers who would normally use -요 with each other switch to banmal within minutes, and players argue about it: speaking down to someone older is a real insult, and the show uses that tension on purpose. Notice when a younger player stays polite to an older one, and what it says about them.
The official announcements are the opposite: formal -습니다 speech, perfectly clear and repeated every game. They're the easiest lines in the show to shadow. Sae-byeok speaks little and bluntly, with traces of a Northern accent, while Ali Abdul, a Pakistani migrant worker, speaks polite, careful Korean, which is a useful reminder that a learner's polite Korean is never wrong. How to learn Korean with Squid Game: a season-by-season plan
Season 1 alone makes a compact, two-to-three-week project. The whole series, with rewatching, takes about 30 hours.
| Episodes | Subtitles | Focus | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 E1 | English | Gi-hun's life in Seoul; the setup and the first game | About 1 h |
| S1 E2–E5 | Korean | Money words, the vote, and the game names; rewatch each game scene once | About 4 h + 1.5 h rewatch |
| S1 E6–E9 | Korean | Numbers and announcements; shadow one formal announcement per episode | About 3 h + 1.5 h rewatch |
| Season 2 (7 episodes) | Korean | New players and voting; listen for who stays polite and who doesn't | About 7 h + 2 h review |
| Season 3 (6 episodes) | Korean, then none | Finish the story; rewatch a favorite game with no subtitles | About 6 h + 1 h rewatch |
Because the vocabulary is so narrow, this is a good show for your first attempt at watching without any subtitles. Try it on a season 1 game episode you've already seen.
