Learn Korean with Hospital Playlist: Medical Words and Level
Trying to learn Korean with Hospital Playlist means taking on two kinds of Korean at once: fast medical talk in the operating room and twenty years of friendly teasing between five doctors. The friendship scenes are some of the best casual Korean on TV; the medical scenes are genuinely hard. This guide gives you the level, 30 hospital and everyday words that recur in the show, register notes and a two-season plan with hours.
Short answer: Hospital Playlist (슬기로운 의사생활) is upper intermediate to advanced, about TOPIK 5. It has two seasons of 12 episodes, each 72–121 minutes, roughly 36 hours. Don't try to understand every medical term: learn the 15 hospital words below and focus on the friends' banmal scenes.

Is Hospital Playlist good for learning Korean?
Yes, for upper intermediate and advanced learners, and as a stretch for TOPIK 4. Five friends who met in medical school now work at the same hospital, Yulje Medical Center (율제병원). Between surgeries and patients, they eat lunch together, tease each other mercilessly and practice as a band. The show is a slice of life with a hospital around it, not a medical thriller.
That split is what makes it useful. The hospital scenes teach a professional vocabulary you'll hear in every medical drama, and the friendship scenes are a benchmark for natural casual speech. If you can follow the five friends at lunch without subtitles, your banmal listening is in good shape.

Why the medical Korean is hard
- Two layers of jargon. Some terms are Sino-Korean (간이식, liver transplant), and others are English or Latin said with Korean sounds, often abbreviated. Korean subtitles help with the first kind but not always the second.
- Speed in the operating room. Surgeons and residents trade short, fast instructions. These lines are the least important for the story, so it's fine to let them pass.
- Department names. Each friend works in a different specialty, and departments are referred to by name all the time. Learn the five below and the show gets much easier.
- Long episodes. Some run over two hours. Split them in half.
- Episode 1 is crowded. It introduces the five friends, their departments, their families and their juniors. Watch it with English subtitles, then switch.

Register notes: 교수님, banmal and the patients
The show runs on three registers. The five friends use banmal with each other, often rough and affectionate, the way Koreans speak to friends of the same year. Juniors use polite speech with them and call them 교수님. And with patients and families, the doctors switch to careful, gentle -요 speech, which is some of the clearest Korean in the show and the best part to shadow.
Listen for how fast someone moves between the three. One of the friends can tease a colleague in banmal, turn around and speak to a worried mother in soft polite Korean in the same scene. That shift is a skill textbooks rarely show. Our guide to Korean speech levels in K-dramas explains each level.
How to learn Korean with Hospital Playlist: a two-season plan
A full viewing is about 36 hours. With split episodes and review, budget around 50 hours, or about three months at four to five hours a week. If you're at TOPIK 4, season 1 alone is a solid project.
| Episodes | Subtitles | Focus | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 E1–E2 | English | Learn the five friends and their departments | About 3.5 h |
| S1 E3–E8 | Korean | Hospital roles and care words; skip lookups in operating-room scenes | About 9 h + 2 h review |
| S1 E9–E12 | Korean | Friendship scenes: rewatch one lunch scene per episode with no subtitles | About 6 h + 2 h rewatch |
| S2 E1–E6 | Korean | Patient and family scenes; shadow the doctors' polite explanations | About 9 h + 2 h review |
| S2 E7–E12 | Korean, then none | Finish the series; rewatch a favorite band practice without subtitles | About 9 h + 2 h rewatch |
Medical vocabulary beyond the list above is optional. Unless you plan to work in a Korean hospital, the words for patients, families and feelings will do far more for your Korean than surgical terms.
What to watch after Hospital Playlist
- Resident Playbook (언젠가는 슬기로울 전공의생활, tvN, 2025, 12 episodes). A spin-off following obstetrics residents at another branch of Yulje, co-created by the same pair and directed by Lee Min-soo. A natural next step that reuses much of the vocabulary.
- Reply 1988 (응답하라 1988, tvN, 2015–2016). The same director and writer, with a neighborhood instead of a hospital and easier everyday Korean. See our Reply 1988 guide.
- Extraordinary Attorney Woo (이상한 변호사 우영우, ENA, 2022). If you enjoy learning a profession's language, this does it for law, at a slightly easier level. See learning Korean with Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
