Learn Chinese with Hidden Love: Campus and Romance Words
You can learn Chinese with Hidden Love (偷偷藏不住, Tōutōu Cáng Bú Zhù) from about HSK 3. It's a modern romance with soft, unhurried dialogue, and it follows its heroine from school to university to her first job, so its vocabulary grows up with her. This guide covers the level, 34 words that keep coming back, the teasing patterns between the leads and a plan for the 25 episodes.
Short answer: Hidden Love is one of the best modern C-dramas for upper beginners, around HSK 3–4 by our estimate. It has quiet two-person scenes, everyday school and campus vocabulary, and only 25 episodes. Watch it with Chinese subtitles, and replay the short exchanges between the leads: they repeat the same patterns all series.

What is Hidden Love, and what level is it?
Hidden Love 偷偷藏不住
Sang Zhi has had a secret crush for years on Duan Jiaxu, her older brother's university roommate. The story starts while she's a schoolgirl and he's a student, and follows them as she grows up and their paths cross again in another city.
Why it works for learners: conversations are short, slow and emotionally clear, and many happen between just two people. Duan Jiaxu's teasing and Sang Zhi's flustered replies repeat across episodes, so the patterns sink in without study. Because Sang Zhi grows from schoolgirl to young adult, you get three vocabulary sets in one show: school, campus life and the start of working life.
The series stars Zhao Lusi as Sang Zhi, Chen Zheyuan as Duan Jiaxu and Victor Ma as her brother Sang Yan. It premiered on Youku in June 2023, came to Netflix in many regions later that month and was filmed in Xiamen. The novel has an official English translation from Seven Seas. Is Hidden Love good for learning Chinese?
Yes. It's on our beginner C-drama list for good reasons, and it rewards a closer look:
- Clear audio. Lines are delivered softly and with pauses. You can often hear every syllable, which is rare in modern dramas.
- Standard Mandarin. The story moves between two fictional cities, Nanwu and Yihe, and the cast speaks standard Mandarin without strong regional accents.
- Practical vocabulary. Exams, roommates, part-time jobs, WeChat messages and family dinners are all words you'll need in real life.
What makes it harder: some inner monologue, a few fast group scenes with Sang Zhi's friends, and the slang and particles young people use. None of that should stop an HSK 3 learner who watches with Chinese subtitles.

Teasing patterns and grammar notes
The romance runs on a few small patterns that are worth learning on purpose:
- Tag questions with 是不是. "You like it, don't you?" style questions are the teaser's favorite tool. Put 是不是 before the verb or at the end of the sentence.
- Softening particles. 嘛, 呀 and 啦 make a sentence pleading, cute or mock-annoyed. Listen to how Sang Zhi's sentences end when she wants something.
- Change with 了. "长大了" (grown up now) and similar lines mark how others notice she's no longer a child. That use of 了 for a new situation is something learners often miss.
- Full names. In Chinese, calling someone by their full name (连名带姓) can signal irritation or seriousness. Notice when characters switch from a nickname or 哥哥 to a full name.
For reading practice afterwards, the original novel is a gentle step into native web fiction. See our web novel list for where to start.
A study plan for all 25 episodes
Twenty-five episodes of about 45 minutes is roughly 19 hours of viewing, or 30 to 35 hours if you pause, replay and review. The stages below are approximate.
| Stage | Episodes (approx.) | Vocabulary focus | How to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sang Zhi at school | Opening episodes | School, family, grades, the parent-teacher meeting | Chinese subtitles; replay each two-person scene once |
| University in a new city | Middle episodes | Campus, roommates, part-time jobs, messages | Shadow two or three lines per episode out loud |
| Growing up | Later episodes | Work, family pressure, romance | Try one episode a week without pausing |
Three episodes a week (about two and a half hours, three to four with review) finishes the show in about eight weeks. At the end, rewatch episode 1 and note how much less you need the subtitles.
Common mistake: watching with English subtitles "just for now." With a show this clear, Chinese subtitles from day one give you far more reading and listening practice at the same time.
What to watch after Hidden Love
- The First Frost (难哄, Youku and Netflix, 2025, 32 episodes): a spin-off from the same author's world, centered on Sang Zhi's brother Sang Yan. Slightly more adult themes, similar level.
- A Love So Beautiful and When I Fly Towards You: more school romances on our beginner list.
- Meet Yourself and other everyday-life dramas on our modern city C-drama list, once you want adult work and life vocabulary.
