Is Stuff You Should Know good for learning English?

Add to my list

Yes, once you are advanced. Stuff You Should Know is two American friends talking at full native speed about how things work, so it builds real listening stamina and wide general vocabulary, with no help for learners at all.

Why it works for learners

This was made for native listeners, and that is its value. Hosts Josh and Chuck explain one topic per episode, so a word comes up repeatedly in context rather than once. With over two thousand episodes, you can choose subjects you already know something about, which makes comprehension much easier. Their banter also lets you hear how Americans joke, digress and interrupt each other in long, unscripted-sounding talk.

What makes it hard

Topic vocabulary can be dense, from science to law, and the hosts' side jokes rely on American culture. There is no slowing down and nothing is simplified. Long episodes can tire you, and attention tends to drop before the end.

How to use it

Choose a topic you know well in your own language. Listen to the first fifteen minutes, then decide whether to continue. Reduce speed slightly if needed. Afterwards, look up five repeated words, then listen again while walking or commuting.
