Is Sunny good for learning Korean?

써니

Add to my list

Yes, at intermediate level, if you like comedy and don't mind rude words. Sunny is full of 1980s schoolgirl slang, and it moves between past and present, giving you both teen talk and adult conversation in one film.

Why it works for learners

A gang of high-school friends gives you loud, funny and very quotable Korean, with insults and loyalty in equal measure. The present-day scenes then show the same women as adults, so you can hear how speech changes with age and circumstances. One main character also arrives at school with a strong countryside accent, which the film plays for laughs, and that gives you a clear first taste of a Korean dialect. It runs 124 minutes.

What makes it hard

The slang belongs to the 1980s and some of it is coarse, so it will sound odd or rude if you use it. Regional speech can throw you, gang fights are noisy, and frequent flashbacks need you to keep track of which period you are in.

How to use it

Watch the film once for fun, then replay one past scene and one present-day scene with the same character. Compare how she talks in each. Note slang in an "understand only" list, and look up one dialect word whenever it blocks you.
