Is Old Enough! good for learning Japanese?

はじめてのおつかい

Add to my list

Yes, for beginners who want real Japanese in very short doses. Old Enough! follows toddlers on their first errands, so sentences are short, the situation is obvious, and an episode rarely takes more than a coffee break.

Why it works for learners

Every episode has a built-in plot you can follow from the picture: a small child gets a task, walks to a shop and tries to bring the right things home. That makes shopping words, family terms, numbers and greetings stick. Children repeat their shopping list aloud to remember it, and that repetition does a learner's work for them. With episodes around 14 minutes, this is one of the easiest native Japanese shows to fit into a daily routine.

What makes it hard

Toddlers are not clear speakers: they mumble, invent forms and drop sounds. The adults around them and the narration go faster than the children do. Families come from different towns, so you may catch regional speech that does not match your textbook.

How to use it

Watch one episode a day and focus on what the child is asked to buy and how the shopkeeper replies. Replay the request at the counter and copy it aloud. Don't chase the narration at first; add it once the short exchanges feel easy.
