How to Relearn a Language You've Forgotten
You took four years of French in high school. You haven't used it since. The good news: most of it is still there, just dormant. The relearning protocol can bring back a B1 in 2-3 months.
The bad news: tracking matters more here than for fresh-start learners, because the curve is non-linear.
What's actually happened
Languages don't fully fade. The neural pathways are still there but de-activated. Relearning is faster than first-learning by roughly 2-4× for the recoverable layer.
The recoverable layer is roughly:
- Receptive vocabulary: ~80% recoverable
- Productive vocabulary: ~50% recoverable
- Grammar intuition: ~70% recoverable
- Speaking confidence: ~30% recoverable (the most lost)
The 12-week protocol
Weeks 1-2: gentle reactivation
- 15-30 min daily of comprehensible input (graded reader, slow podcast)
- No grammar drills yet
- Goal: re-tune your ear and eye to the language
Weeks 3-6: vocabulary refresh
- Add 30 min/week of SRS, focused on common-word frequency lists
- One Netflix show in target language with target subs
- Goal: reactivate productive vocabulary
Weeks 7-10: speaking reactivation
- Add weekly tutor (italki) session, 30-45 min
- Daily 5-min self-talk or voice memo
- Goal: rebuild speaking confidence (the slowest curve)
Weeks 11-12: validation
- CEFR self-assessment
- Real-world test (conversation with native speaker, or read a book chapter)
- Goal: confirm what level you've returned to
What to expect from tracking
The hours-to-CEFR ratio is non-linear in relearning. Expect:
- First 30 hours: rapid recovery (the "I remember!" phase)
- Next 30 hours: slower (the actual gaps surface)
- Beyond: roughly normal learning rate
Track expecting front-loaded gains. Many quit at the slowdown thinking they've hit the ceiling. They haven't.
What not to do
- Start with grammar: you've forgotten the feel of the language; rebuild that first
- Compare to your peak: your old peak doesn't matter; track from now
- Skip speaking: it's the most-faded skill; needs the most attention
The realistic outcome
After 12 weeks of moderate effort (~5-7 hours/week), most relearners return to within one CEFR level of their old peak. With sustained effort, they exceed it within 6 months.
