Language Reactor: A Complete Tracking Guide

Language Reactor (formerly Language Learning with Netflix) is the best browser-extension immersion tool we have right now. Dual subtitles, click-to-translate, keyword highlighting, hover-to-pause. Used well, it's a genuine accelerator. Used badly, it's just Netflix with extra steps.

What it does

The deliberate vs passive split

Language Reactor lets you watch in two modes:

1. Active: subtitles on, pausing, looking up words, saving phrases. 20-minute episode = 45-60 minutes real time.
2. Passive: just watching with dual subs, no looking up. Closer to comprehensible input.

Both have value. Tag them differently in your tracker. Comprehensible input tracking covers when to use which.

Content selection

Pick content where:

• You'd watch it anyway in English (motivation)
• The vocabulary is at i+1 for you (not i+5)
• The dub or original is in your target language (not auto-translated subs)

For Spanish: La Casa de Papel (intermediate), Elite (intermediate), Money Heist (intermediate). For Japanese: Terrace House (intermediate), anime with target-language audio. For Korean: K-dramas with hardcoded Korean subs work well.

How to track Language Reactor sessions

Tag distinctly in your tracker ("LR" or "immersion"). The per-minute yield is variable:

• Active mode: high yield. Counts as input + study.
• Passive mode: medium yield. Counts as input only.
• Background mode: low yield. Don't log unless you were genuinely listening.

Common mistakes

• Subtitles in English instead of dual: defeats the point. Dual or target-only.
• Saving 200 phrases per episode: you'll never review them. Save 5-10 maximum.
• Picking content that's too hard: you'll retain nothing.

The session-to-SRS pipeline

Saved phrases are gold — they're real-context vocabulary. Every Sunday, copy them into your SRS. Without this step, the saved-phrases feature is just a list you'll never look at.

Free tier is enough

The free tier covers 90% of use cases. The paid tier adds nice-to-haves but isn't required for most learners.
