Chinese Internet Slang for C-Drama and Web Novel Fans (2026)
Chinese internet slang is the part of Chinese your textbook skips and C-drama fans can't avoid. It's in the 弹幕 (danmu) flying across Bilibili videos, in Douban reviews, in Weibo comments and in web novel author notes. Most of it is short, punchy and a few years old at most, which is exactly why it's hard to look up.
This glossary covers the slang that drama and web novel fans actually use, grouped by theme, with pinyin, meaning and a usage note. Where a word appeared on the annual top-ten buzzword list of the language magazine Yaowen Jiaozi (咬文嚼字), we give the year, so you can tell fresh slang from slang that already sounds dated.
The essentials: yyds (永远的神, "the GOAT"), 破防 (pòfáng, emotionally wrecked), 磕CP (kē CP, to ship a couple), 上头 (shàngtóu, hooked), 内卷 (nèijuǎn, pointless rat-race competition) and 躺平 (tǎngpíng, "lying flat", opting out). All are casual: use them online and with friends, not in exams.

How current is this slang?
Chinese internet slang turns over fast. A word that is everywhere one year can sound like a dad joke two years later. The Yaowen Jiaozi annual list is a useful timestamp, because it records which words dominated each year. Here are the entries that matter to fans.

What does yyds mean?
yyds stands for 永远的神 (yǒngyuǎn de shén), "eternal god": the best ever, the GOAT. It's written with the initials of the pinyin and said either letter by letter or in full. Fans use it for an actor, a scene, a song or a bowl of noodles: 这部剧yyds, "this show is the best." It was everywhere around 2021 and is still common, but heavy use now sounds a little try-hard.
What do 内卷 and 躺平 mean?
内卷 (nèijuǎn, "involution") describes competition so intense it stops producing anything: everyone works harder just to stay in the same place. It took off in 2020, when students used it for brutal university workloads, and spread to jobs, schools and parenting. The short form 卷 (juǎn) works as a verb and adjective: 太卷了, "it's way too competitive"; 卷王, the person who outworks everyone.
躺平 (tǎngpíng, "lie flat") is the response: refusing the race, wanting less and doing the minimum. A 2021 online post made it a national debate. Both words appear constantly in modern dramas about work and family, such as those on our modern city C-drama list.

When not to use Chinese slang
- Not in exams or formal writing. HSK essays, work email and anything to older people should use standard words: 非常好, not yyds.
- Watch for dated slang. Words like 绝绝子 or 蓝瘦香菇 (a 2016 meme) can make you sound like you learned Chinese from an old meme page. When in doubt, check the year table above.
- Some words are a little sharp. 杠精, 柠檬精 and 流量明星 are digs, and 塌房 is about scandal. Use them about public figures, not the person you're talking to.
- Understand first, use later. The goal is to read danmu and comments. Using slang naturally comes after you've seen a word in context many times.
The best place to see this slang in the wild is the danmu on Bilibili videos and the comments under drama clips. For creators worth watching, see the best Bilibili and Douyin creators for Chinese learners.
