The best TVB dramas for learning Cantonese are the ones that keep the same people talking about the same things every day: family sitcoms first, then 20 to 30 episode dramas set in offices, taxis and newsrooms, and finally crime and period shows. The hard part is choosing, and understanding why the Chinese subtitles never match what you hear.

Quick picks: Beginners: Come Home Love: Lo and Behold (daily half-hour sitcom) and Best Selling Secrets (20-minute office sitcom). Intermediate: The Exorcist's Meter and Heroes in White. Advanced: The Queen of News, Line Walker and Rosy Business. Watch with Chinese subtitles, but expect them to be in written Chinese, not spoken Cantonese.

How the levels work (there is no HSK for Cantonese)

Mandarin has the HSK, but there is no widely used international exam for spoken Cantonese, so this list uses three plain bands. They are estimates based on four things: speaking speed, how specialised the vocabulary is, how much slang or period language there is, and how much the plot repeats itself.

  • Beginner: everyday settings (home, office, restaurant), short episodes and the same small cast. Useful from roughly A2, around 550 study hours on this blog's Category IV scale, with English subtitles at first.
  • Intermediate: modern settings with one specialist field (taxis, medicine, a family business). Comfortable around B1, roughly 1,100 hours.
  • Advanced: fast professional talk, slang-heavy crime dialogue or historical speech. Aim for B2 and up, 1,760 hours or more.

Those hour figures come from our guide to how long Cantonese takes. Below A2, native drama is mostly noise; spend the time on learner material first.

Why don't TVB subtitles match what you hear?

Because TVB drama subtitles are mostly written in standard written Chinese, the Mandarin-based written language used for newspapers and schoolbooks in Hong Kong, while the actors speak colloquial Cantonese. For a learner it means the subtitle is a translation, not a transcript. (Hong Kong films often lean more on Cantonese characters in their subtitles; see our Hong Kong movies list.)

You hear (Cantonese)JyutpingSubtitle showsMeaning

冇mou5沒有not have
咗zo2了completed action
嘅ge3的possessive
睇tai2看to look, watch
乜嘢mat1 je5什麼what
點解dim2 gaai2為什麼why

How to use this: listen for the spoken word, glance at the subtitle for meaning, and learn both. The written forms pay off when you read Hong Kong news; the spoken forms are what you need to talk. Sentence-final particles such as 啦 (laa1) and 囉 (lo1) usually vanish from subtitles entirely, so you only learn them by ear. Our Cantonese vs Mandarin guide explains the written/spoken split in more detail.

Beginner: sitcoms

Come Home Love: Lo and Behold 愛·回家之開心速遞

  • Beginner
  • 2017–2026
  • TVB Jade
  • Sitcom, 2,868 half-hour episodes

Jyutping: oi3 wui4 gaa1 zi1 hoi1 sam1 cuk1 dai6. The Hung family runs a transport company and lives through ordinary Hong Kong problems, with one twist: the spirit of a rich young man who died in a car crash is stuck in a camera, and only some people can see him.

Why it works for learners: It aired almost every weeknight for nine years, so the same cast says the same everyday phrases thousands of times: greetings, food, rent, arguments about money. Episodes are short and self-contained, which means you can start anywhere. The last episode aired on 7 August 2026, and it follows the original 愛·回家 (Come Home Love, 2012–2015, 804 episodes), which works just as well.

Best Selling Secrets 同事三分親

  • Beginner
  • 2007–2008
  • TVB Jade
  • Sitcom, 364 episodes of 20 minutes

Jyutping: tung4 si6 saam1 fan1 can1. A woman who left Hong Kong for the United States comes back eighteen years later to find her son, gets a job at his advertising agency, and has to deal with a mother-in-law who wants her gone.

Why it works for learners: Twenty-minute episodes split cleanly between office and home, so you get workplace phrases (meetings, bosses, clients) and family Cantonese side by side. Hong Kong office talk is full of English words dropped into Cantonese sentences, and this show is a gentle way to get used to it.

Intermediate: short modern dramas

The Exorcist's Meter 降魔的

  • Intermediate
  • 2017
  • TVB Jade, starring Kenneth Ma
  • Supernatural comedy, 21 episodes

Jyutping: gong3 mo1 dik1. A cheerful taxi driver accidentally wakes a stone spirit, starts seeing ghosts, and teams up with the host of a paranormal TV show. A sequel followed in 2020.

Why it works for learners: The title is a pun: 的 (dik1) is short for 的士 (dik1 si2), "taxi." The dialogue is working-class street Cantonese, joking and fast, with directions, fares and Hong Kong place names. Episode 1 is hard because of speed, not vocabulary: the jokes come in quick back-and-forth.

Barrack O'Karma 金宵大廈

  • Intermediate
  • 2019
  • TVB Jade, starring Joel Chan and Selena Lee
  • Supernatural romance, 20 episodes

Jyutping: gam1 siu1 daai6 haa6. A security guard with no ambitions keeps dreaming of a woman in a qipao, then meets a flight attendant who looks just like her. The old building they live in seems to shape the lives of its tenants, and the story cuts back to its 1960s nightclub.

Why it works for learners: Each episode follows a tenant's story, so the vocabulary rotates (jobs, neighbours, love, money) without losing the main thread. The 1960s scenes give you a taste of older Hong Kong speech without going fully historical. A sequel, Barrack O'Karma 1968, came out in 2022.

Heroes in White 俠醫

  • Intermediate
  • 2025
  • TVB Jade, starring Moses Chan
  • Medical and business drama, 20 episodes

Jyutping: hap6 ji1. A Chinese-medicine practitioner from a family of medicated-oil makers leaves the family business to start his own brand, and meets a property agent who has lived with chronic pain for years.

Why it works for learners: It was TVB's highest-rated drama of 2025 in Hong Kong, and it is short and current. The specialist vocabulary is narrow and repeats: pain, massage, herbal oil, branding, family rivalry. Learn a dozen of those words in the first two episodes and the rest becomes much easier.

Heart of Greed 溏心風暴

  • Intermediate
  • 2007
  • TVB Jade
  • Family drama, 40 episodes

Jyutping: tong4 sam1 fung1 bou6. A wealthy dried-seafood and abalone merchant, his wife and the woman he keeps on the side end up at war over the family fortune, and the household splits into camps.

Why it works for learners: It won Best Drama at the 2007 TVB Anniversary Awards and is still one of the most quoted Hong Kong dramas, so lines from it turn up in memes and conversation. The language is family Cantonese at full emotional volume: how to address in-laws, how to argue, how to apologise.

Triumph in the Skies 衝上雲霄

  • Intermediate to advanced
  • 2003
  • TVB Jade, starring Francis Ng
  • Workplace romance, 40 episodes

Jyutping: cung1 soeng5 wan4 siu1. Pilots and cabin crew at a fictional Hong Kong airline, Solar Airways, juggle training, friendships and a love triangle. A second series aired in 2013 and a film followed in 2015.

Why it works for learners: It shows a side of Hong Kong Cantonese that textbooks skip: professionals switching into English for technical terms in the middle of a sentence. That makes it easier in some scenes and confusing in others. The personal storylines stay in everyday Cantonese.

Advanced: news, crime and period drama

The Queen of News 新聞女王

  • Advanced
  • 2023
  • TVB Jade and Youku, starring Charmaine Sheh
  • Newsroom drama, 26 episodes

Jyutping: san1 man4 neoi5 wong4. A veteran anchor at a fictional news station fights a rival anchor for control of the newsroom, and the young reporters under them are caught in the middle. The Queen of News 2 (25 episodes) aired in late 2025.

Why it works for learners: It won Best Drama at the 2023 TVB Anniversary Awards and was a hit far beyond Hong Kong. The register is the hard part: on-air scenes use formal broadcast Cantonese, which sits close to the written language, while the office fights are fast and cutting.

Forensic Heroes 法證先鋒

  • Advanced
  • 2006
  • TVB Jade, starring Bobby Au-yeung
  • Police procedural, 25 episodes

Jyutping: faat3 zing3 sin1 fung1. Forensic scientists and police in Hong Kong work through a run of murder cases. The franchise has six series so far; Forensic Heroes VI: Redemption (2024, 24 episodes) was TVB's top-rated drama that year.

Why it works for learners: Lab scenes pack in science and legal terms, often mixed with English, which makes this a vocabulary-heavy watch. The case-of-the-week structure helps: each case repeats its key terms (evidence, suspect, autopsy) several times before it closes. The series stand alone.

Line Walker 使徒行者

  • Advanced
  • 2014
  • TVB Jade, starring Michael Miu and Charmaine Sheh
  • Undercover police thriller, 31 episodes

Jyutping: si2 tou4 hang4 ze2. When the officer handling a group of undercover agents is killed and their records are wiped, a chief inspector sets out to find them before the criminals do. It spawned two TV sequels and two films.

Why it works for learners: Triad and police slang is the attraction and the difficulty. Characters use nicknames, street terms and rough language that a textbook will never teach, and they say it fast. Watch it after you are comfortable with family dramas, and look up slang in a Cantonese dictionary such as words.hk rather than guessing from the subtitles.

Rosy Business 巾幗梟雄

  • Advanced
  • 2009
  • TVB Jade, starring Sheren Tang and Wayne Lai
  • Period drama, 25 episodes

Jyutping: gan1 gwok3 hiu1 hung4. In 19th-century eastern China, a woman who escaped her family's execution marries a rice merchant as his fourth wife and ends up running his business against the wishes of the rest of the household.

Why it works for learners: It won six TVB Anniversary Awards, including Best Drama. Period dramas are spoken in Cantonese but use older forms of address, polite set phrases and idioms that track the written language closely, so the subtitles help more here than in modern shows.

Words you will hear in every TVB drama

These come up constantly in modern TVB dramas, whatever the genre. Most never appear in the subtitles in this form.

A four-week plan with hours

About five hours a week, for a learner around A2 to B1:

  • Week 1: ten episodes of a sitcom (about four hours) with English subtitles. Write down five phrases per episode that you hear more than once.
  • Week 2: the same sitcom with Chinese subtitles. Notice each place where the subtitle differs from the speech, using the table above.
  • Week 3: episodes 1–3 of an intermediate drama. Watch each one twice, the second time with no subtitles at all.
  • Week 4: keep going with the drama, and shadow one two-minute scene a day: pause, repeat the line, copy the tone.

For more listening outside drama, see our Cantonese YouTube and podcasts list, and Cantopop songs for something to sing along to.

Track your Cantonese hours

Cantonese learners usually build their own material from shows like these, so there is no textbook telling you how far you have come. Log each episode in LangTrack and you can see how many hours of drama you have watched, how your listening time compares with study time, and how close you are to the next band on this list.

Frequently asked questions

Are TVB dramas good for learning Cantonese?

Yes. TVB has made Cantonese-language drama in Hong Kong for decades, so there are thousands of hours of natural dialogue at every level. Start with a long-running sitcom such as Come Home Love: Lo and Behold, then move to 20 to 30 episode dramas.

Why don't TVB subtitles match what the actors say?

TVB drama subtitles are mostly written in standard written Chinese, which follows Mandarin grammar, while the actors speak colloquial Cantonese. You will hear 佢係 (keoi5 hai6) and read 他是 for the same line. Treat the subtitles as a translation, not a transcript.

What is the easiest TVB drama for beginners?

Sitcoms are easiest: Come Home Love: Lo and Behold and Best Selling Secrets use everyday family and office Cantonese, with short episodes and the same words every day. Expect to need English subtitles at first, as with any native show.

Where can I watch TVB dramas legally?

TVB streams its shows on myTV SUPER in Hong Kong and on TVB Anywhere outside Hong Kong, and it has uploaded full episodes of older dramas to official YouTube channels. Catalogues and subtitle options vary, so check your region.
